CURRENT EXHIBITION
Exhibition Opening Thursday 13th March 6pm-8pm.
Please join me and my fellow exhibiting artists in this celebration of textile art!
Following the success of Naarm Textile Collective’s group exhibitions, Stitching Change and Uncommon Threads, Naarm Textile Collective is building on the increasing interest in contemporary textile art with a new exhibition for 2025 titled Thread – tangles / detangles.
Thread – Tangles / detangles will bring together work by artists from the Naarm Textile Collective who are exploring the possibilities of thread in their work. Each artist is invited to use their unique perspective and textile discipline to follow a different thread, wherever it may lead them.
Thread – Tangles / detangles will explore tangible and intangible connections, processes and techniques. Transformed through knitting, weaving, looping and stitching, threads carry significant personal and cultural narratives. The exhibition aims to encourage viewers to rethink their relationship to thread, be aware of its materiality, its possibilities and limitations.
Thread, surrounds us and accompanies us from birth until the day we die. It’s like a second skin. Yet because of these close connections, it becomes almost invisible. Despite an upsurge in interest in craft and making, textiles are still almost invisible in the world of art. Rooted in craft techniques, work made with thread is generally seen as ‘women’s work’, overlooked or disregarded by the contemporary art scene. This exhibition aims to change this view.
Naarm Textile Collective will present an exhibition of works which will stimulate thought and conversation to make thread more visible in the world of fine art. We will transform the Glen Eira City gallery into a lively, welcoming, dynamic and thought-provoking exhibition.
The exhibition is curated by Tamara Russell
